UPDATE: Gears of War (2010-2011)

Len Wiseman is still attached to direct and co-write the film. It seems that Wisemen left Motorcade to focus his attention on the project. Wiseman is behind the Underworld franchise directing two of the films. Along with his impressive Live Free & Die Hard the fourth installment in the Die Hard series. The film is setup at New Line, which is now a division of Warner Brothers. Back in January Len talked about his plans for Gears of War. Which could lead to a possible trilogy.

"The hope is that were wanting to do a three movies and really cover the bases on everything. Basically a harder edged Lord Of The Rings....It’s going to be much more [on the] science fiction side of it than the creature side of it. I’ve always been much more of a sci-fi action fan than a horror fan."

There hasn't been much talk of casting. Although, at Comic-Con Wiseman mentioned that he already has someone in mind to play the part of Maria, the doomed wife of second-in-command Dominic Santiago. "If I can convince [Kate Beckinsale] and I think I have a shot... I'd love to see that"

Chris Morgan (Wanted) who co-wrote the film with Wiseman also talked about the film at Comic-Con. He mentioned that "Emergence Day" would make the film, it refers to when the enemy Locusts rose from underground, revealing themselves to the human occupants of the planet Sera. The Gears games take place long after Emergence Day and so it is something no one has seen fully realized. I wouldn't be surprised if they officially title the first film Gears of War: Emergence Day. Wiseman talked about pushing to include female COGs in the film, since only male COGs are featured in both games. It's rumored that there will be a female COG named Alex Brand featured in Gears of War 3.

UPDATE: Screenwriter Billy Ray has been hired to also write for the film. Ray previously wrote State of Play, Breach and Hart's War. He also wrote scripts for the remake of Westworld and Motorcade. Chris Morgan (Wanted) had been working with Lisewan to rewrite the script originally written by Stuart Beattie (Collateral).

Casting Thoughts:

Jeffrey Dean Morgan (Watchmen, Red Dawn) as Marcus Fenix

Milla Jovovich (Resident Evil 4, Fifth Element) as Alex Brand

Sharlto Copley (A-Team, District 9) as Damon Baird

Michael Jai White (Black Dynamite, Dark Knight) as Cole

Naomi Watts (King Kong, Eastern Promises) as Anya Stroud

Jason Statham as Michael Barrick
